President John Hamlin called the meeting or order at 12 noon.


DAR Chapter Chaplain Susan de Boisblanc gave the invocation.


Pledges of allegiance to the American Flag, Texas Flag and SAR Flag were led by Bill Mayo, our latest approved member, and recited by all.


Everyone introduced themselves and their guests. Special guests, in addition to honorees and our guest speaker, included a number of DAR members.


Our guest speaker Cheryl Tucker, current Regent of the George Washington DAR Chapter was introduced by Sue Lenes. Ms. Tucker gave an excellent presentation on the Clay Massacre in Virginia in 1783, involving one of her Patriot relatives, Mitchell Clay.



Ms. Tucker was presented a Certificate of Appreciation and Lapel Pin for her excellent presentation.

Clark Wright was presented with the Roger Sherman Medal for 3+ years of service to the Chapter, including serving as Webmaster.

Dave and Nick Barhan were presented Bronze Good Citizenship Medals for their service to the Chapter in providing trailers and transportation for Chapter parade events.

Ms. Jamie McClaughlin was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for her service to the Chapter while working at Fish Tales.


The Secretary’s Report for the July 2017 meeting was submitted previously to all members electronically. A motion was made by Gene Shaner and seconded by Clark Wright to accept the minutes. Motion passed unanimously to approve the minutes.


Treasurer Gene Shaner presented his Treasurers Report to the Chapter.


John Hamlin, on behalf of Pete Lenes, presented the Registrar’s Report showing that we have two supplemental and four membership applications submitted, and that he is working on new member applications for four persons. Four new member applications have been approved along with seven supplementals this year, and total membership presently stands at 64 members compared to 57 on January 1, 2017.

Medals and Certificates presented to date include: 23 Certificates of Appreciation, 5 Eagle Scout Certificates, 1 Flag Certificate, 26 SAR and non-SAR Medals and Certificates, 1 Memorial Certificate, and 8 ROTC (Sr. and Jr.) Medals and Certificates.


  • Statue Committee – Bill Adriance provided an update on brochure and grant application status.

  • Board of Managers Meeting

    • Larry Tidwell has agreed to serve as Chairman of the Registration Committee, replacing Eddie De La Houssaye.

    • All members are invited to John Hamlin’s house on October 6, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. to stuff goody bags.

  • Color Guard – Larry Tidwell reported that the Color Guard will present the Flags at the upcoming joint DAR/SAR Chapter meeting on September 16, 2017 at the San Luis Hotel in Galveston.


  • Board of Managers Meeting will be held October 13 – 15, 2017 in Galveston at the Hilton Hotel. Registration is now open – go to the events tab on the Public TXSSAR web site to register. Also, please see John Hamlin about volunteering on a Committee. We are in need of volunteers for the Registration Table and still need additional silent auction items.

  • The NSSAR Congress will be held in Houston, TX in July of 2018. All members are encouraged to attend, and volunteers are needed to work the Registration table, as well as serve as Tour Bus Captains for the NASA, Bush Library, and San Jacinto Monument Tours.


  • Our September meeting will be a joint meeting with the DAR at the San Luis Hotel on September 16, 2017. All members planning to attend need to notify John Hamlin. Cost will be $25/person.

  • Wreaths Across America will be at 12:00 p.m. on December 16, 2017 at the LaMarque Cemetery. More information to follow.

  • The Honor Flight Network is scheduled to arrive at Houston Hobby Airport on September 23, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. and has requested that we provide a Color Guard.


All Compatriots and guests recited the Recessional.


The meeting was adjourned at 1:20 p.m. CDT.
